Background and purpose:This study aimed to investigate the structural relationships between character strengths and existential anxiety, with the mediating role of attachment to God, among students at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz. Materials and methods:The statistical population consisted of all students at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz during the 2023–2024 academic year. Using a convenience and voluntary sampling method, 270 participants took part in the study by completing an online questionnaire. The research instruments included the Existential Anxiety Scale (Good & Good, 1974), the Short Form of the Attachment to God Questionnaire (Ghobari Bonab & Haddadi Koohsar, 2011), and the Short Form of the Character Strengths Questionnaire (Seligman & Peterson, 2004). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.) Results: The results indicated that the overall research model was confirmed, and all direct and indirect paths in the model were significant. Specifically, character strengths were both directly associated with reduced existential anxiety and increased attachment to God, and indirectly—through attachment to God—significantly related to existential anxiety. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of simultaneously considering positive psychology components and spiritual dimensions in gaining a deeper understanding of profound human anxieties such as existential anxiety, and they can serve as a basis for designing psychotherapeutic interventions focused on enhancing character strengths and strengthening spiritual attachment.
