Background and Objectives: Suicide is a significant public health issue influenced by various psychological, social, cultural, and biological factors. Religion is recognized as a key factor in individuals’ mental and social well-being. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between religion and the risk of suicide in Iran.
Methods: This systematic review included articles published from 2000 to 2025. Relevant studies were identified through comprehensive searches in national and international databases, including SID, Magiran, Irandoc, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Keywords such as “suicide”, “suicidal ideation”, “suicide attempt”, “religion”, “religiosity”, and “Iran” were used. Inclusion criteria were studies with appropriate methodology focusing on the association between religion and suicide within the Iranian context.
Results: Out of a total of 251 identified records, 15 articles were reviewed, most of which focused on the impact of religiosity and religious beliefs on suicide. The majority of studies suggest that religious beliefs and convictions play a significant protective role in reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. However, under certain stressful conditions or within the context of religious conflicts, this protective effect may be diminished or even reversed.
Conclusion: Religion may serve as a protective factor against suicide. The findings highlight the importance of incorporating religious and spiritual aspects in suicide prevention strategies and mental health interventions in Iran. Further research is recommended to examine these associations across different social and cultural groups.
