Journal of Religion and Health JRH 2345-5268 2345-5276 2016 3 2 Evaluation of the Effects of Date Palm on Childbirth Based on the Scientific Interpretation of Verses 26-23 of Surah Maryam (As) in the Holy Quran Seyed Hossein Hosseini Karnamy Aliasghar.asghari67@gmail.com Ali Asghar Asghari Velujayi - hosin.hosini@gmail.com One of the most remarkable miracles of the Holy Quran, which has been established as a scientific fact, is presented in verses 23-26 of Surah Maryam (AS). These verses focus on the effect of date palm on childbirth. Date palm is a fruit with active compounds, the high impact of which has been noted in the immaculate conception of Virgin Mary (AS). This study aimed to evaluate the known effects of date palm on childbirth based on the emphasis of the Holy Quran and Islamic traditions. This review was conducted via searching in databases of ISI, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, ISC and SID, in addition to the Holy Quran, exegesis and narratives of the Holy Quran, and Islamic traditions. Keywords used in the literature search were delivery, date palm, and Hazrat Maryam (Mary) (AS). Collected data in relation to the research topic were recorded and analyzed. According to the results of this study, in addition to the Holy Quran, numerous narratives have emphasized on the benefits of date palm in childbirth. Date palm is an advantageous nutrient during pregnancy and postpartum period since it strengthens uterine muscles and reduces hemorrhage after delivery. Moreover, consumption of date palm during breastfeeding enhances neonatal growth and development, while serving as a nutrient reserve in the body of the mother and infant. Journal of Religion and Health JRH 2345-5268 2345-5276 2016 3 2 Biologic Effects of Decorative Use of Gold on Male Fertility Based on Islamic Narratives Majid Malekzadeh Shafaroudi mshafaroudi@mazums.ac.ir Mohammad Bagher Mohammadi laieni mb.mohammadi@mazumz.ac.ir Background and Objectives: Gold is a heavy, valuable metal with valance of three. The most important applications of gold are in jewelrymaking, dentistry, electronics, various catalysers, mintage, as well as sports and military medals. Researchers investigated the effects of age, nutrition,  and chemical toxins on male fertility. This article aims to investigate some of the reasons behind the Islamic order concerning the decorative use of gold for men. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, semen samples from 25-35 year-old males were collected and a standard questionnaire was used to record medical information of the participants. Then, Perkin-Elmer method (1973) was applied to assess the amount of gold in semen samples with an accuracy of nanogram by flameless atomic absorption using carbon rod atomizer. Results: Average gold content per unit of semen in non-goldsmith males was 92.2 ng/ml. The amount of gold content per unit of semen revealed a significant and logical relationship with percentage of natural motile and none-motile sperms. According to the data collected by the questionnaire, reduced fertility in male goldsmith population was significant. Conclusion: The relationship between reduced sperm motility and increase in the amount of gold content per unit of sperm, in addition to the findings regarding a significant reduction in fertility rates among the jewelers of Tehran and Mazandaran provinces of Iran, may confirm the narratives of the Prophet Mohammad and the Shia Imams in prohibiting the use of gold ornaments or utensils for men. Journal of Religion and Health JRH 2345-5268 2345-5276 2016 3 2 A Novel Approach to Reference to Medical Narrations Mohammad Shamsoddin Dayyani Tilaki dayanimsh@mums.ac.ir Muhammad Imami The Infallible Imams (p.b.u.t) paid great attention to concepts such as health, sickness, and treatment with a realistic approach to human. The Islamic medicine narrations attributed to them have been subject to discussion and challenge for long. With the recent tendency of scientists in various fields of medical sciences towards traditional and Islamic medicine, at times they go to extremes concerning acceptability of Islamic medicine by experimental sciences, specifically medicine. Some believe that we should treat these kinds of traditions, as with jurisprudential ones, as divine statements that were made by the Infallibles whose knowledge was divinely granted, which cannot be erroneous. However, by having a deeper look, there appear to be serious challenges in the case of medical narrations and noting these problems prevents us from error in thought. The article at hand deals with some of the problems related to these narrations and how to solve them. This study with reference to original documents of religious narrations and other related sources tried to introduce the serious problems of these medical traditions and studied the problems that go back to the citation, whole concepts, addressee, and meanings of the terms. This study aimed to prove that medical traditions are like other Islamic narrations and infallible statements. They should be studied and evaluated in a specialistic way, with avoidance of prejudgments. To use a narration as a reason, one needs to be familiar with about fifteen fields of basic Islamic sciences, to reference to a medical narration. This reference would be useful only as evidence if it has all the necessary conditions. Narrations Reference Medical Addressee Citation 2016 2 01 59 66 http://jrh.mazums.ac.ir/article-1-222-en.pdf
