Background and Purpose: Positive adolescent development, through enhancing feelings of competence and self-confidence, shaping identity, and providing opportunities for learning and participation, prepares adolescents for a successful transition to adulthood. Psychological and spiritual factors can play a significant role in this process. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of emotional self-regulation between religious attitudes and adherence to religious beliefs in relation to positive adolescent development.
Materials and Methods: This research employed a descriptive correlational design. The statistical population consisted of all high school students in Tehran. Using Cohen's formula and cluster sampling method, a total of 411 participants were selected. The data collection instruments included the Religious Attitude Questionnaire (Khodaiyari et al., 2000), the Adherence to Religious Beliefs Questionnaire (Golzari, 2000), the Positive Adolescent Development Questionnaire (Goldof et al., 2014), and the Emotional Self-Regulation Questionnaire (Larsen & Pizmak, 2004).
Results: The results indicated that religious attitudes (β= 0.315,p=0.001) and adherence to religious beliefs (β= 0.458,p=0.001) have a direct effect on self-regulation.Self-regulation has a direct effect on positive development (β= 0.627,p=0.001). Emotional self-regulation mediates the relationship between religious attitudes (β= 0.292,p=0.001) and adherence to religious beliefs (β= 0.425,p=0.016) with positive psychological development.
Conclusion: Religious attitudes and adherence to religious beliefs can enhance positive development in adolescents by directly influencing emotional self-regulation.
